Perspective
Coiled clay, glaze, 2011
I made this piece to examine the stages of growth people go through, physically and emotionally. They are made from coiled clay and glaze.

The world holds an endless amount of information, but the more we learn, the more doors are closed to us. Most people see their lives as accumulating knowledge as they go along, and therefore widening their perspective. I see people learning things, either actively, by influence, subliminally or unconsciously, and closing themselves off from other perspectives. When we learn one way, we typically automatically reject or forgo the other ways. This is a part of life and part of how our identities are formed.

Displayed is a consecutive progression of development from birth, pure ignorance and innocence, to a stage of learned and restricted perspective. However, they can be arranged to fit any particular person, and you can pick the piece that you identify with most.

I see myself as the middle piece, in the middle of a turmoil of learning and changing.
